The Trump administration's crackdown on immigration has prompted some Democrats and activists on the left to call for ICE to be abolished.

Operations at the facility were suspended eight days ago due to "security concerns".

"We went up to [Capitol] Hill several months ago and told them what the loopholes were about the Flores settlement agreement", he said, referring to a 1997 law about establishing government standards for immigrant detention.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in OR issued a statement Thursday saying that federal officers look "law enforcement action" to reopen the Portland ICE facility on Southwest Macadam Avenue.

The question was posed to de Blasio following the Democratic primary results in New York's heavily-Democratic 14th Congressional District, which saw an upset victory from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Harris said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday that the nation's immigration enforcement should "start from scratch" by eliminating ICE. Calls for its dissolution, once rare, are spreading.

Texas Observer reporter Jason Buch has obtained a letter signed by 19 special agents in charge of Homeland Security Investigations, or HSI, asking Sec. Pramila Jayapal of Washington state and Adriano Espaillat of NY on legislation to eliminate the agency.

An Inspector General's report published this week by the Department of Homeland Security, the federal agency in which ICE is housed, found that ICE does an inadequate job of inspecting and maintaining its facilities, and fails to correct poor practices.

This is a stunning & unsurprising indictment of Trump's claimed objective behind the crackdown on "illegal immigration".

Leading progressives, like Sens.

In Washington and across the country, thousands of people rallied to oppose the Trump administration's draconian immigration policies, including in Portland where dozens of protesters set up a protest camp next to an ICE facility. Federal law enforcement officers took nine people into custody Thursday during a sweep of protesters at the Southwest Macadam Avenue headquarters of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

The agency is under mounting pressure amid a string of recent developments that have put ICE in a less-than-flattering light.

"The Democrats are making a strong push to abolish ICE, one of the smartest, toughest and most spirited law enforcement groups of men and women that I have ever seen", Trump tweeted from his private golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The office had been closed for more than a week because of an occupation by activists. "I don't think they're going to try and tear this whole thing down". He cited the 28-year-old Democratic socialist's unapologetic embrace of the issue as a key factor in her Tuesday triumph. Stu Tanquit, one of the veterans, said earlier in the week that "the only way they will get me out is to drag me out". "So she just hammered him on it".

"I don't think ICE today is working as intended".
