Gareth Southgate: England earned 'belief for generations' by breaking hoodoo

This peaked at 127,000 tweets per minute when Eric Dier scored the decisive penalty in England's narrow second round World Cup win over Colombia last night, an event which momentarily sent the United Kingdom into meltdown.

With their dogged defending, tactical discipline, and reliance on penalties, own-goals or any other way possible to get the ball in the back of the net, Sweden haven't been the prettiest team to watch at the World Cup.

For one family watching the Colombia v England World Cup match there was an extra level of tension.

Their last meeting at a major tournament was Euro 2012, where the Three Lions won a gripping encounter 3-2 thanks to goals from Andy Carroll, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck.

Argentina flirted with disaster in the group stage and although hopes were high that they could improve after beating Nigeria in the group stage, it was not to be.

Moscow police said on Tuesday they had detained a person who vandalised a statue of a renowned Soviet football player outside the Spartak stadium, where England were playing Colombia in a Round of 16 match. Common thinking at the time was it was futile practicing penalties, given the inability to recreate the pressure of the shootout on the training field.

The song has formed the basis for the narrative around England's 2018 World Cup performance so far, and England fans are genuinely starting to believe that it is indeed coming home. Kane's Tottenham Hostpur teammate, Dele Alli, has previously streamed his games on Twitch and both of them have played with Fortnite sensation Tyler "Ninja" Blevins in the past.

"The World Cup is a very special worldwide competition", he said.

"And, again, after this tournament, whatever happens now, get behind them, because in two years' time, four years' time, that might be the support that helps them go on and win that trophy".

"But I would say England - nobody speaks about England but they are unsafe - Brazil or France". Way too often a Spanish player would check and move horizontally rather than look to move into space, making it easy for a fearless but limited Russian Federation side to pack their defence and hang on for a penalty shootout which had a feeling of inevitability about it.

Gareth Southgate and his men have been lauded as heroes in Russian Federation and back home and the way they've conducted themselves so far in the tournament has earned them high praise.

England will play Sweden at 2am Sunday in their quarter-final match.
