Hot and humid, few storms for Independence Day

Hot, sticky weather will cling to Maine this week

'Extreme, dangerous' heat to continue this week, meteorologists say

Temperatures will reach risky levels in much of Southern California late this week and into the weekend, and elevated fire danger will confront the region, the National Weather Service said today.

Clouds begin to clear as the afternoon moves forward. That danger of severe thunderstorms will extend into the northern Plains region as well as parts of New England. Sufficient convergence and uplift should occur closer to this focus boundary to create some scattered thunderstorms. Forecasters were concerned about a thunderstorm that was producing golf ball-size hail and damaging winds.

Check WBZ-TV, CBSBoston.com and The National Weather Service for critical updates. If you're going to be out today please stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and limit your caffeine and alcohol intake. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

Postpone outdoor games and activities. It will still be important to hydrate and take shady breaks (and a/c breaks, too!). In addition, be sure to check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.

The Scarborough Police Department announced on its Facebook page that the town's public library will serve as a community cooling center Monday and Tuesday. These factors along with an increase in high and mid-level clouds will all contribute to near-record high overnight temperatures again tonight, again providing no relief from the heat, especially in the Chicago "heat island". The highest heat index values are expected from late morning into the early evening. There was a 10-day heat wave in the summer of 1995 from July 24 through August 2. The Excessive Heat Warning will continue for Chicago itself, where the cumulative-effects of the oppressive heat will last longer and be greater.

In some areas, 90-degree temperatures could remain lingering into Friday, he said, noting Saturday then would be the best bet.
