Lukaku: Belgium are well prepared for Brazil

World Cup QF: Both Brazil, Belgium battling bad vibes

RUSSIA 2018 Gabriel Jesus has started all four of Brazil's games at the World Cup

Brazil started brightly but Fernandinho headed into his own net from a corner after 13 minutes and a stunning counter-attack saw Romelu Lukaku feed De Bruyne, who blasted home in the 31st minute.

Renato Augusto scored late on, but Belgium held out. Brazil won 2-0 through second-half goals from Rivaldo and Ronaldo and went on to win the tournament.

On 21 minutes De Bruyne set up Hazard on a free run inside to set up Thomas Meunier, only for Miranda to block his intended cross for Lukaku.

That freed De Bruyne to play in a more advanced role and the City midfielder revelled in the space Brazil continually gave him.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a number of fine saves and needed every inch of his nearly-two metre frame to deny Brazil's talisman Neymar with a glove in the dying minutes.

Up next for Roberto Martinez's side will be a highly anticipated semifinal matchup with their southern neighbors, France, the last remaining pre-tournament favorite still breathing.

Tite said left back Marcelo, who injured his back in the group-stage game against Serbia, will start against Belgium after fully recovering.

"The greatest challenge of a World Cup is having mental fortitude".

"A lot of respect, you 'll only get respect for Brazil from Belgium for what Tite is achieving with his team".

"In the second half they changed tactically and Brazil were better, but even then we managed to create opportunities".

Belgium will now face France, who beat Uruguay 2-0 earlier in the day, in the semifinal in St Petersburg on Tuesday to earn a place in the World Cup final. Not for one minute were they (Belgium) going to give up.

The South Americans battled but their talented generation of players, including the defensive rock Diego Godin, look like ending their global careers without the World Cup success they have threatened to deliver.

Hazard continued to cause Brazil's defence all sorts of problems after the break, while Neymar, who has been heavily criticisied in Russian Federation, produced an underwhelming display.

I have no complaints about it - he is playing well, Brazil are winning while other traditionally strong teams have gone home, and the team is scoring at the right time and playing good football - but people insist on focusing on a minor thing that really isn't so important.

"I think it's a game that when you are a little boy, you dream of being involved in a World Cup, facing Brazil in a quarter-final", he said, "so from our point of view we can enjoy from the first second".
