08 July 2018, 12:41 | Susie Olson

Armed, barricaded suspect may be former NBA, UCLA basketball star: report

Authorities said a man fired at police and barricaded himself in a Sherman Oaks Calif. home on Friday

His team confirmed his death on Twitter after speaking with his agent. The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Im said.

Honeycutt, 27, was the No. 28 ranked player in the country coming out of Sylmar High School in California. He declared for the National Basketball Association after his sophomore campaign, getting drafted by the NBA's Sacramento Kings. When police arrived at his Sherman Oaks residence, Tyler, who had barricaded himself inside the property, reportedly began shooting at them, prompting officers to return fire. It was unclear whether Honeycutt shot himself or was shot by police.

UCLA forward Tyler Honeycutt plays against Oregon State in the first half Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Pauley Pavilion in Westwood. According to a report from ABC-7, the player was found dead after an altercation with the LAPD.

According to ABC7, the suspect's mother called police to say her son was acting "erratically". Overnight, Los Angeles Police Department SWAT officers went into the home and discovered the man's body, police said in a tweet shortly before 4 a.m.

At least 30 residents surrounding the Sherman Oaks, Calif., home were evacuated, the report said. He was declared dead at the scene by the fire department.

In 2013 he left the U.S. to play for Israeli team Ironi Nes Ziona, followed by BC Khimki in 2014. The Sacramento Kings drafted him with the 35th pick in the 2011 draft.

The Kings traded Honeycutt to the Houston Rockets in 2013. For the past few years, he had bounced back and forth between Khimki and Anadolu Efes in Turkey.
